ArtTech Fusion 2022 - Organic Indigo Dye

On December 7th, at the V campus of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, the Organic Indigo Dye Workshop took place an extraordinary event within the ArtTech Fusion 2022 series. This workshop offered a unique opportunity to learn about indigo dye, a traditional dyeing substance of the Dao ethnic group, and to explore why using indigo-dyed fabrics is considered a sustainable approach to fashion.
With guidance from MSc. Lê Võ Sơn Quân, the workshop introduced the foundational steps to understanding natural dyeing methods and demonstrated how to create unique patterns on fabric simply by securing the fabric in desired ways.
Indigo dyeing is a technique that dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE and is widely recognized around the world. In Vietnam, this dyeing technique has been traditionally used by highland communities in their daily lives to create garments. However, the process requires patience and time. As many local brands shift their focus toward sustainability, indigo dyeing and traditional Vietnamese methods are gaining increasing popularity.
The Organic Indigo Dye Workshop offers a deeper understanding of indigo dyeing techniques and sustainability in fashion design. It provides an opportunity to connect fashion with the environment, empowering participants to become more conscious consumers in an era dominated by fast fashion.
